Statement of Intent for Entering Blogademia

I am only a novice in academe, a lowly seminarian anticipating the glories of further study. One might ask: With what authority doth he enter the lofty discussions of higher minds? I would respond by claiming no such authority. I was blessed with a wonderful education in biblical studies at Messiah College and have enjoyed the confusing wonders of seminary life at Fuller Theological Seminary. Within a few years, I hope to plumb the depths of biblical profundity in some grand doctoral studies program in New Testament studies. My intent is not to show my authority, but my interest.

I find myself with many curiosities which seem integral to my journey towards academic study of the Bible. As I discover what it means to be an academic, I hope to share my experience and acquired knowledge in an autobiographical manner. I also hope to enunciate issues of biblical interpretation and criticism as I read books and articles, listen to lectures, write papers and the like. I would be gratified if I am able to do these things with a touch of lightness, perhaps even some humor, to keep my perceptions in perspective.

If those true academics, whose ranks I hope to join one day, grace their knowledgeable eyes upon my words here, I am humbled by their presence and would appreciate their words of wisdom in any form. If my blog finds readership with non-academics, I would be delighted if I am able to make difficult issues from the academy of biblical studies more attainable for them. When I imagine myself as part of academia, I pray that I would be a servant to the people of God. This does not mean that I intend to compromise the need for rigorous academic method with integrity, instead I hope to wrestle through issues of biblical interpretation which are important to those who live their lives “according to the book” (”kata ton biblon“). And though people of the Christian faith are my expected audience, I would also be more than ecstatic if I receive feedback from those beyond the fold of Jesus followers. I revel in interfaith conversations which honestly and respectfully explore our similarities and differences. So if you’re a Jew, a Moslem, an Atheist, an Agnostic, a Hindu, or anything else that begins with a capital letter, then have at it!

In the end, however, this online journal of my thoughts is more an exercise for myself than it is anything meritorious or laudable. This forum is a place for me to air both my conclusions and my confusions. It is an occassion for articulating thoughts that float within my mind and have no anchor. And with that, I say: Thanks for reading and don’t take me too seriously (i.e., there is no need to yell at your screen if I’m spouting heresy).
