Hmmm. I did check out Martin's A Hymn of Christ from the library, but I hadn't thought of that. I actually haven't run into Martin as of yet. I'm not too worried about disagreeing with my professors, though. Actually, I think things are more interesting when I do! Yep, that is the nature of scholarship :)

What's most audacious about taking on this text AT FULLER is that NT Emeritus Prof. Ralph P. Martin has written so much on it. It could be rather intimidating, especially if you end up coming up with serious disagreements with Martin. But, hey, that's the nature of scholarship, no?

Wow, Chris. That is incredibly helpful. I guess my post is a list of all the various angles that I would like to explore regarding this topic. Your insightful categorization is enormously valuable and helps me take this project to the next level. I'm still not sure which one I would pick or how I would go about doing it, but it gives me a way of categorizing my findings from research. Thanks!!

This is why I think blogging is so great.

Patrick, there is nothing wrong with the topic per se. You do not need to second guess that or "take on a different topic." I would, however, suggest landing on a particular focus within the topic. Right now I see at least three research projects within the stated topic: 1) the role of death and obedience in the hymn and how these themes are related in the hymn itself. This, to me, is a primarily literary exploration; 2) the function of the hymn in early Christian communities. This is primarily a historical exploration; and 3) the ways the hymn might have been remembered in the early communities. This is primarily a sociological exploration. Of course, all three of these things are related; and, if done well they could be parts of a larger project (though I think I would treat them in a different order than presented here. In stead of 123, I would go with 132). But, you could focus on just one of them for this paper. Good luck!
